When Jacob Simmons decided to follow in his dad’s footsteps and become a scout, he didn’t realise he would one day take out the highest award in the association.

Last week the 2nd Bunbury Sea Scout received the prestigious Australian Scout’s Medallion, the culmination of years of dedication and commitment to scouts.

Jacob, 15, said he had learnt many life skills during the eight years he had been part of the 2nd Bunbury Sea Scouts.

“I’ve learnt so much from different activities,” he said.

“Some were a challenge but all were really fun.

“My favourite activities are camping and hiking — we recently went on a camping trip in Byford.”

The aim of scouting is to encourage the physical, intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual development of young people so they take a constructive place in the community as responsible citizens.

Jacob encouraged other children to give it a go.

“My whole family is involved and it’s good fun,” he said.

“There are plenty of opportunities for both girls and boys.”

The 2nd Bunbury Sea Scout Mariners Troop leader Rosina Mogg said not many scouts Jacob’s age earned the ASM.

“I am extremely proud, he’s stayed committed and focused — his personal growth has been huge,” she said.

In February Jacob will travel to Government House in Perth, where he will meet with the Chief Commissioner at the official ASM ceremony.

He plans to continue with the scouts association as a venturer and hopes to earn the highest award in that section as well.
