A 27-year-old man caught speeding 80km/h over the speed limit after drinking alcohol has been given hefty fines by the court. Jordan Wayne Di Mario appeared via telephone in Bunbury Magistrates Court on Friday where he pleaded guilty to driving with a blood alcohol level exceeding 0.05 and reckless driving. On December 23 last year, Di Mario was driving south on Bussell Highway in Carey Park, when he zoomed past an unmarked police vehicle, catching their attention. Police followed the man in attempt to intervene, conducting a speed check that captured the vehicle travelling about 140km/h within a 60km/h speed zone. When pulled over and questioned by police, Di Mario told then he was “being stupid and had had a bit to drink”. Upon taking a breath test, he returned a blood alcohol level of 0.06. Representing himself, the 27-year-old told the court he accepted “full responsibility” for the offending and there was “no one to blame but himself”. He explained how he was “out of his mind” at the time of the offending, having received some bad news. He further told the court he was otherwise an “upstanding citizen” and would try to “improve” his actions going forward. Magistrate Joanne Andretich handed down a total of $1400 in fines for both offences, along with a six month licence disqualification.
