King's ready for more crowns

South Western Times

At 50, Bunbury body builder David King says he feels better than he did 20 years ago.

And after taking first place at the National Amateur Body Builders / World Fitness Federation South Pacific Titles last month King has now cemented his place among the sport’s elite in WA.

A four-time Mr WA winner, King also won the Mr Australia title for the country’s most outstanding body builder in 2009.

He has been competing for 10 years.

‘‘I got to 40 and I wasn’t feeling really flash,’’ he said.

‘‘I’ve always had body building in the family, my brother used to do it many years ago and so did my sister.

‘‘When you hit 40 things start to let go but I decided that I’d get back into the gym and I haven’t looked back since. I’m actually fitter now than I was at 30.’’

In preparation for competitions King hits the gym seven days a week, training a different muscle group each day.

He also goes on a 12-week diet of six high protein meals, that also include moderate levels of carbohydrates.

He also drinks between two or three litres of water each day.

After a decade of contest’s and sacrifices, King admits that an end to the hard slog of competition body building could be in sight.

But while he toys with the idea of retirement, he insists he will still be in the gym, and would like to see more people look after their health.
