Local dance group throwing Kate Bush party in the name of charity

The Bunbury dance community is embracing a world-wide event in the name of charity, involving hundreds gathering to the sounds of UK music icon Kate Bush. The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever is an annual event in which hundreds of people dress like Kate Bush and perform the choreography to smash hit Wuthering Heights. The event has been held in Bunbury for the past six years, run by event organiser and dance teacher Suzanne Crews. The event in other parts of the world has been done just as a social practise, however it was Mrs Crews’ and other event organiser Jaque Mckeigs’ idea to make the Bunbury event a charity fundraiser. This year’s event will raise money for Solaris Cancer Care South West, a personal choice according to Mrs Crews. “I said let’s find a charity we both like and that’s close to our hearts in some way, and that’s why we chose Solaris Care,” she said. Mrs Crews said the fear of learning the famous choreography shouldn’t stop people from joining in. “It’s easier than it looks, the routine,” she said. “We’ve had people come down from Perth and participate. We’ve had maybe four or five under 15 last year. “We’ve had men. We’ve had people with disabilities participate. You can participate in a wheelchair, I did a wheelchair session up in Perth, taught them the dance. Everybody can do it.” The event became a world-wide success after a show — created by group Shambush — became a hit at Brighton Fringe in 2013. Since then, the performances have happened annually all across the world, in some cases trying to break the world record for most people dressed as Kate Bush in one place. Bush has seen a resurgence in popularity after the inclusion of her song Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) was featured in the Netflix series Stranger Things in 2022, resulting in the song topping the charts in eight different countries nearly 40 years after it was released. The event will also feature baked goods and raffle tickets for sale, with businesses donating a mass of prizes, with all proceeds going to Solaris Care. The event will take place on Saturday, July 29 at the Bunbury Rowers Club at 10am and is free for anyone to participate.
