Maraea Te Oke Mae Hunia had posted online almost daily while allegedly negletcting baby who died on Wednesday

The young mother accused of neglecting her baby boy until he died at just six-months-old was posting to her thousands of online followers nearly daily in the four months she allegedly failed to provide him with proper medical or therapeutic care. South West woman Maraea Te Oke Mae Hunia, 31 and her partner Jahley Poata, 30, made their first appearance in court on Friday after being charged with neglect following the death of their child just two days earlier. The Collie couple allegedly failed to provide the baby proper medical or therapeutic care between June 1 and September 27. His condition was so bad he had to be rushed to Perth Children’s Hospital on September 26, where he died on Wednesday. During this time, Ms Hunia — whose social media states she is a mother-of-eight, a model and beauty consultant — posted dozens of photos and videos across her social media, including posing and flaunting outfits to her 7500 Instagram and 3000 TikTok followers and stated she was “blessed” with her life and family. In one post on August 18, Ms Hunia said in an Instagram caption she was “extremely grateful for my life and family.” A TikTok caption on August 23 stated: “Working out, eating healthy and having eight children, keeping your house spotless, while having your own business is not for the weak.” She commonly used hashtags about being a mother-of-eight, with many posts also focusing on her post-pregnancy body. The woman claims to be a “public figure” who owns the wellness business Healthy Empowering Lifestyle, as well as being an “executive glamour model” for Japanese company Maneki-Meow. In her most recent post on Facebook last Saturday — while her baby fought for his life in hospital — Ms Hunia uploaded eight images of her family while wishing another of her children a happy birthday. “You entered this world so quick, fast and easy my baby, now you are the tallest of your siblings and the loudest to (sic) lol (sic) omg (sic), you are nearly taller than mummy,” she wrote. The pair appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on Friday, charged with one count of failing to protect a child, where it emerged they had failed to provide the proper care over nearly a four month period. Neither applied for bail and spoke only to confirm their names. A police statement earlier in the day said child abuse squad detectives had charged the pair in relation to the death of the six-month-old boy. They will next appear in court on Tuesday.
