Panthers outplay HBL for final win
In the final round of the SWNFL home and away season, Carey Park secured second spot with a 52-43 win over a resolute Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault at the South West Sports Centre on Saturday.
The first quarter of the game was played with high intensity, with both teams matching each other goal for goal.
Maia Brown dominated at wing defence for Carey Park, where she secured several intercept passes.
Despite this, the visitors led by a goal at quarter-time, but the game was very much up for grabs.
However, during the second quarter, Carey Park began to get on top of the Lions, with mid court players Chloe Willsher and Gorgia Babich able to get the ball to the shooting combination of Sophie Bell and Kennedy Tupaea.
This change in fortune put the home side up 26-23 at half-time.
The Lions introduced ECU Souwest Jets representative Serena Nandapi into the fray, where she slotted into goal keeper position.
Nandapi and Lauren Vincent, both managed to impact how the Panthers got the ball into their shooting circle.
With the Panthers ahead by two goals heading into the final quarter, both the Panthers and Lions tinkered with their line ups in a bid to find a winning edge.
However, this worked in the home side’s favour, who outscored the Lions 16-9 in the final term to secure the win.
League leaders Bunbury easily defeated Augusta-Margaret River 61-15 at the South West Sports Centre on Sunday, while in the remaining game of the weekend, the Eaton Boomers rolled to a 71-29 win over South Bunbury at the Eaton Recreation Centre on Saturday.
