RSPCA looking for feedback on WA’s “fur babies” and how to best help them

RSPCA WA is asking pet owners to fill out a survey on issues ranging from the most common pet names to the impacts of the cost-of-living crisis. Last year’s inaugural pet census helped RSCPA learn more about what pets we love in WA and how the economy has changed how we live with our pets. The data revealed that half of all pet owners who rent said they had struggled to find pet-friendly housing. The RSPCA is seeking fresh data to see what work needs to be done in the community to best help pet owners. RSPCA WA spokesperson Louise Rowe said the survey could help identify the type of work that needed to be done. “While we do have a bit of fun with the answers, they also help us inform our important work in the community and help us to advocate on issues like affordable pet-friendly housing,” she said. “They also help us pinpoint where our outreach services are most needed.” Late last year, disturbing data revealed that five South West towns — Bunbury, Busselton, Harvey, Augusta-Margaret River and Collie — were in the top 10 regional hot spots for animal cruelty in the State. A major reason for the spike was the number of people not being able to afford to take their pets to the vet because of the cost-of-living crisis. Ms Rowe said data indicated the crisis was affecting pet owners so badly that a number of them had no choice but to surrender their pets. “We have seen an increase in requests for surrender and anecdotally we are hearing more people are struggling to afford the basics such as vet care, grooming and even pet food,” she said. “Sadly, our inspectors have dealt with cases recently where people haven’t reached out for help and their pets have suffered greatly as a result. “This is an opportunity for us to gain further insight into the prevalence and impact of these issues.” The 10-minute survey can be completed online on the RSPCA website and will be open until Friday, February 16.
