Shire of Dardanup launches trial for new designated 24hr stopover bay

The Shire of Dardanup has launched a three-month trial aiming to provide travellers with a new spot to stop and rest in the region.
The shire has commenced its trial for a 24-hour caravan and recreational vehicle stopover at Ferguson Hall, where one designated stopover bay will be available at the hall’s carpark for fully self-contained caravans and RVs to stop for up to 24-hours.
Shire president Tyrrell Gardiner said the initiative aimed to support tourism in the Ferguson Valley and also provide a safe and convenient rest point for visitors passing through.
He said the trial was a reflection of the council’s commitment to welcoming and supporting tourists.
“We love welcoming visitors to the Shire of Dardanup, and the Ferguson Valley is one of our most beautiful destinations,” Cr Gardiner said.
“This trial gives travellers a safe place to stop, rest and enjoy the area, and we hope it adds to their positive experience while they’re here.
“We’re always looking for ways to support tourism and local businesses, and encouraging visitors to spend more time in our region is a great outcome for the community.”
Cr Gardiner said the bay was clearly marked and signposted and had strict rules in place.
The bay is only to be used by self-contained caravans and RVs, meaning all vehicles must have freshwater, greywater and blackwater storage onboard, a toilet and kitchenette.
Tents, annexes and temporary camping structures are examples of what is not allowed.
Cr Gardiner said the trial was unanimously supported at the shire’s council meeting in December.
He said during the trial period, feedback would be gathered from nearby residents by the shire rangers as part of community consultation.
“At the end of the three-month trial, council will review how the stopover was used, along with the community feedback, before considering whether to make the site a permanent addition,” he said.
“The Shire of Dardanup currently operates similar 24-hour RV and caravan stopovers at Burekup Oval and near Dardanup Town Hall, which have proven popular with travellers exploring the region.”
