Transformation complete: Collie’s Lake Kepwari campgrounds officially opened in latest tourism boon for town
The multimillion-dollar transformation of Collie’s premier water recreation location has been completed, a new campground and picnic area finishing off the latest in a raft of measures to lure tourists to the area.
The final touches to the $5.8 million makeover of Lake Kepwari — which includes a new picnic area, improved pathway access, barbecue shelters and toilet facilities — completes a 2017 McGowan Government election commitment, while paying tribute to two dedicated Collie stalwarts.
A 32-site camping area at the northern edge of the lake has been named the David Ugle Campground, while the campground on the eastern side has been renamed Mick Murray Campground in acknowledgement of the former Collie MP’s contribution to the community.
These additions were officially opened by Environment Minister Reece Whitby and Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns.
The former open cut coal mine site has been transformed into a water-based recreation hub for boating, swimming, waterskiing and camping, named Kepwari, meaning “playing in water” in the local Wiilman language.
The new facilities bring the total number of campsites at Lake Kepwari to 53 and form part of the State Government’s $24.5m infrastructure investment program into parks and forests in the Collie region in a bid to shore up the town’s tourism credentials as it transitions away from coal-powered industries.
Other tourism investments in the area include the mega mural at Wellington Dam, trails for mountain biking, walking and driving, and a series of grants to support established and emerging businesses in the sector.
Mrs Hanns said she was proud to see the delivery of another election commitment to the Collie community.
“I’m so proud to see Lake Kepwari transform into a popular water-based recreational hub,” she said.
“These new attractions will lure more visitors to the area, boosting our local economy. What a great time to explore all the region has to offer.”
