Wallam Watch: Harvey-born goal shooter Donnell Wallam’s star continues to rise after round four domination

Harvey-born sharpshooter Donnell Wallam has continued to shine bright on the Suncorp Super Netball courts with another outstanding performance for the Queensland Firebirds. The 28-year-old once again started in goal shooter in the Firebirds’ clash with the Giants on Tuesday and was quick to dominate in the shooting circle alongside goal attacker Gretel Bueta. Despite a few early mistakes during the opening quarter, Wallam found her groove during the second term extending the Firebirds’ lead with 15 goals as well as a further 16 goals during the third quarter. After coming off for a well-earned break with eight minutes until full-time, Wallam finished with a game-high 45 goals from 53 shots, including a super shot, as well as five goal assists, two rebounds and four feeds. Former Firebirds skipper Gabi Simpson had high praise for her teammate, who she said added a “dangerous dynamic” to the team’s attack. “She brings this joy to the game,” she said. “She just goes out there and every shot she gets in, she has ... that big smile on her face – and that just spreads throughout the team.” It comes just two days after Wallam put in another stellar effort during the Firebirds’ 77-69 loss to West Coast Fever on Sunday, which saw Wallam line up on the same court as Jhaniele Fowler in a goal shooting showdown. After a fast start, the Firebirds looked set to build a double-figure lead heading into half-time, with Wallam and teammate Gretel Bueta proving difficult to stop in the attacking circle until Sasha Glasgow and Fowler turned the momentum in Fever’s favour. Although the Fever eventually bested the Firebirds, Wallam made 43 goals, including four super shots, as well as two goal assists, two rebounds and three feeds.
