Cory Lloyd Crombie: 2022 WA Male Para Athlete of the Year accused of possessing child exploitation material

Prominent athlete, motivational speaker and the 2022 West Australian Male Para-Athlete of the Year Cory Lloyd Crombie has been banned from accessing the internet after he appeared in court accused of possessing child exploitation material. The 20-year-old appeared in Bunbury Magistrates Court on Monday morning for his first appearance on two counts of possessing child exploitation material, relating to an alleged incident late last year. While no facts were read to the court, it is understood the offences allegedly took place on November 23, 2022. During the brief hearing, Mr Crombie only spoke to identify that he understood the charges, muttering “yes, your honour” before having the matter adjourned to next month for legal advice. Though he was released on bail, part of his bail conditions require him not to access the internet for any reason, with the exception of undertaking online banking or conducting research for his computer science studies at Edith Cowan University. The former BMX rider was left in a wheelchair after a riding incident at the age of 15, while he was training for the national BMX titles. Since then, he has become an inspiration and role model to young children across the state, most notably within the South West region where he grew up. Mr Crombie has more than 1300 followers on Facebook where he promotes himself as a motivational speaker. His flyers market his workshops to primary and secondary students with his “relatability” promoted heavily. “Cory’s motivational speaking package for primary school children includes: Lessons in resilience and realising what you can overcome,” the pamphlet reads. “The importance of inclusivity. “The power of self belief, and creating a positive outlook and attitude.” Mr Crombie has competed internationally in wheelchair racing and established a wheelchair basketball league in the South West region. He had aimed to compete at the 2024 Paralympics.
