Burekup residents are set to experience a different kind of Christmas carols this weekend as part of an inclusive council project.

Popular festive songs will be performed with both song and sign language by an Auslan Choir as the popular Movies by Moonlight returns to the town on Saturday.

Dardanup Shire president Tyrrell Gardiner said the talented choir was formed as a council project aimed at building community connection, accessibility and inclusivity.

“The Auslan Choir not only demonstrates the best parts of the festive spirit but also presents a collaborative opportunity to come together with so many important and positive social outcomes,” he said.

Cr Gardiner congratulated the choir for an honourable mention at the National Awards for Local Government this year, describing the recognition as “well-deserved acknowledgement”.

The choir consists of 24 community members who completed an eight-week course in sign language as part of preparation for this weekend’s event, which was supported by Southern Ports.

An outdoor screening of the Christmas comedy Elf will commence following the Auslan Choir’s performance, which kicks off at 6pm.

The event is free and family friendly, with healthy food and drink options available.

Guests are also encouraged to bring along their own picnic or snacks to enjoy.
