Australind residents have been told to act now as firefighters battle a blaze near Paris Road and Barnes Avenue.

A bushfire watch and act alert has been issued for people bounded by Paris Road, The Boulevard, Collie River and Barnes Avenue in Australind.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services says there is a possible threat to lives and homes and people need to leave or get ready to defend their properties.

The blaze started near the intersection of Paris Road and Break O’Day Drive and was first reported at 2.52pm.

Some roads may be closed and motorists are asked to avoid the area or drive carefully due to smoke.

The department is warning those prepared to defend their homes need to make final preparations now and if people are not home, do not try to return as conditions in the area could be dangerous.

It is not yet known how the fire started.

More as it comes to hand.
