Reigning champions the Bayview Bar have once again claimed the title of Regional WA’s Best Steak Sandwich after an intense live cook-off on May 15.

The Bayview Bar won a close contest against Divers Tavern (Broome), Cervantes Bar and Bistro and Lancelin’s Endeavour Tavern to ensure the top gong returned to Bunbury.

Chef Hung Nguyen won the sought-after prize with aged scotch fillet cooked in clarified garlic and thyme butter on Turkish bread with pickled red onions, horseradish mayonnaise, onion jam and Swiss cheese.

Venue owner Craig Giacomel said the “proof was in the pudding” and he was excited to back up last year’s award-winning creation.

“I was pretty confident because I was looking at what everyone else was doing and I thought we were keeping it simple with fresh ingredients,” he said.

“Hung was under pressure but he nailed it because he backs himself in.

“The process is what was important and we don’t compromise until we get things right.”
