William Barrett and Sons will host its 25th consecutive Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea on bThursday to raise money for cancer research.

Event organiser Taryn Barrett said the company was the only one in WA to have run the event every year since it began in 1994.

“The Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea was started by the Cancer Council 25 years ago and William Barrett and Sons started hosting it that very same year,” she said.

“From really humble beginnings it has grown into a really big event.

“It is a pretty big milestone and something pretty impressive for Bunbury people to be proud of.”

Mrs Barrett said the company had raised $284,000 over the past 24 years.

“We want to see how high we can get it and supersede the $300,000 mark,” she said.

“We want it to be a record breaker, that is what we are aiming for and higher than any other year.

Mrs Barrett said there would be plenty of entertainment on the day.

“There will be home-made morning tea and a sausage sizzle lunch so it is $5 entry,” she said.

“We have local schools performing so there is South Bunbury Primary School, Dalyellup Primary School and Bunbury Primary School.

“There is also a promising young singer Charlotte Rowe and also Festival Brass Bunbury coming.”

Mrs Barrett said it was always a special event.

“It is just fantastic to see a funeral parlour, which is normally the place for a sad occasion, but for this one day in May it just comes alive with colour and laughter,” she said.

“To see it transformed into a cafe for this one day of the year is just a wonderful occasion.”

The Biggest Morning Tea will be held on 24 May.
