Xavier Cotton hit a game-high 21 points as men’s A grade league leaders Tornadoes Black outlasted Tornadoes Red 90-80 in Friday night’s Bunbury Basketball Association derby at the South West Sports Centre.

Black, who have hit their straps over the past month, were forced to dig deep after Red threatened to cause an almighty boilover.

Trailing 72-69 with six minutes and change left in the game, Red’s Braden Wilson hit an impressive three-point shot to tie the game, after his side had trailed by double digits in the shadows of half time.

Wilson’s effort sparked Black into action, who went on a 4-0 offensive run courtesy of Tim Collins and managed to keep their close rivals at bay for the remainder of the clash.

Sadly for the Bunbury Basketball Association, it was another round of savage beatings across the remaining men’s A grade matches.

Eaton’s 108-55 loss against Aces Sky marked the club’s sixth defeat by more than 53 points this season, with two of the games decided by 92 and 96 points.

Aces White remained in second spot following a 79-57 win over the Dunsborough Oilers at the Naturaliste Community Centre, despite missing a host of household names due to representative duties.

In women’s A grade, the high flying Dunsborough Oilers again ran rings around their opposition, disposing of Aces Sky 72-40.

In a familiar pattern, it was three players with WABL and SBL experience who did the bulk of the offensive damage.

Cousins Adele and Dana East combined for 42 points between them, while Beige Harris (19 points) was a pillar of strength. Tornadoes Black faced minimal resistance against the Eaton Eagles, rolling to a 95-8 win, with the Eagles held scoreless during a forgettable second half.
