BREC acknowledges Reconciliation Week with screening of documentary The Last Daughter

The Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre will be screening the documentary The Last Daughter on Friday as part of National Reconciliation Week. The documentary centres around the healing journey of proud Wiradjuri woman and co-director Brenda Matthews, who navigates the story of her life split between her Indigenous family and her white foster family. The directors as well as BREC are excited to be hosting the screening which they believe is the perfect film for National Reconciliation Week. Matthews said she felt humbled she could continue on the tradition of storytelling through the medium of film. “Since the beginning of time, our ancestors would share story and pass them down through the generations,” she said. “In our culture, it was passed down orally, so it’s humbling to continue that responsibility through the lens of a film.” Matthews said she hoped the sharing of her story would bring change and begin the healing process for all who watch it. “We all hurt, we can all be healed, if we choose to go on a path of healing.” Matthews and co-director Nathaniel Schmidt said the heart of the story lies in bringing two worlds together, something reflected in their filmmaking process. “Brenda had the knowledge for her story, I had knowledge for filmmaking,” Schmidt said. “We were responsible for one another and supported each other. It was a truly reciprocal relationship.” The screening will also include a yarning circle and is free for all ages.
