For more than two years, Dardanup’s Bob and Dot Brittain have worked to keep a section of the Bunbury Outer of Ring Road neat.

They said they watched the care taken to lay the first section of the asphalt between Boyanup-Picton Road and South Western Highway and described it as a wonderful piece of infrastructure.

After contacting Keep Australia Beautiful, the couple was able to adopt the 4km road as well as two stretches connecting from the Willinge Drive roundabout.

They picked up 14 syringes and other rubbish on their first day while collecting 139 bags full of litter in their first week, but have been able to manage the rubbish since then.

“What we’ve found is that if people see that it’s clean, it stays clean,” Mr Brittain said.

“I’ve had some health issues over the past 12 months so we haven’t been able to do it as much, but we’re getting back into it now.”

After collecting the rubbish, Main Roads picks up the bags from the roadside within days.

“We call it working for the pension and it’s on doctor’s advice that we keep moving anyway,” Mr Brittain said.

“We like doing it and we get appreciation from passing drivers tooting their horns on occasion.

“It’s about our pride in the area.”
