Bulls fight back and hold off persistent Aces Sky
The Bulls women’s team found themselves in a deep hole during the first quarter of Tuesday night’s 50-42 win over a determined Aces Sky at the South West Sports Centre.
On the back of some excellent hustle, Aces Sky had bolted to a 10-0 lead inside the opening seven minutes of the game.
Bemused looks were aplenty as the quality Bulls offence appeared to be momentarily railroaded.
Sure, their ball movement around the arc was good, but being denied time and space inside the paint was ultimately hampering their ability to put up points in bunches.
A layup from Imogen Van Laere finally broke the scoring drought for the Bulls, which not only provided a valuable spark, but it kickstarted a shift in their offensive mindset.
Spearheaded by fearless point guard Anita Reca, the Bulls got creative in finding new pathways to the offensive glass, which resulted in several trips to the charity stripe.
In doing so, the deficit gradually whittled below double digits and by half-time, the Bulls were in front and humming along nicely.
But Aces Sky, who were determined to ensure their early foundations counted, refused to go away and played their experienced opponents close until the dying minutes of the game.
Consecutive baskets by Amarah Mohammad put her side up by a point, however, Reca swiftly responded with a clinical three-pointer to wrest control back for the Bulls, who held their nerve for the remainder of the game.
In other matches, it was also a big night for Tornadoes Red, who made it three wins in a row after seeing off the improving Eaton Eagles 56-50, while Tornadoes Black had all the answers against the Dunsborough Oilers 78-43.
