Bunbury chef keen to mix it with the best

A Bunbury chef has started sharpening his knives and warming his pans ahead of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work alongside some of the world’s biggest names in cooking.

Market Eating House owner Brenton Pyke will head to Margaret River Gourmet Escape this weekend and cook at the Westpac Gourmet Beach Barbecue.

“I’m very excited, it’s my first time,” he said.

“It will be a pretty full on weekend with lots of people.”

Mr Pyke will be joined at the barbecue by fellow West Australian wood-fire legends Kenny McHardy and Scott Bridger, but said it was the chance to meet his idol David Chang that he was most excited about.

“He’s doing the Friday night event and has always been someone I’ve really looked up to,” he said.

Other big names set to attend the event include Marco Pierre White, Amanda Cohen, Carlo Cracco, Ciccio Sultano, David Thompson, Danny Bowien, Colin Fassnidge, Jock Zonfrillo, Matt Stone, Josh Niland and Mark Best.

It was the exposure to all these big name chefs that Mr Pyke said would be the most special part of the experience and the opportunity to develop his cooking.

“It’s just how many chefs are down there and the whole weekend is based around food,” he said.

“The networking side is going to be very exciting, I definitely want to take something away from that but also upping the exposure for our restaurant.

“Quite often Bunbury gets bypassed or missed because everybody seems to forget about the little places along the way.”

Mr Pyke said attending the event would open up Market Eating House to a whole new clientele that may not have known the restaurant existed.

The barbecue will form part of the larger Gourmet Village event this weekend which in turn forms part of the 10-day long Western Australia Gourmet Escape.
