Two Bunbury women will navigate their way around the Bunbury CBD on Saturday in an effort to raise awareness about accessibility issues in the city.
Jodi Larke and Alison Gildove will take on the “day in a wheelchair challenge” which will see them go shopping in the CBD and attend popular events Diwali and PrideFEST 2017.
The idea came to the duo as they discussed wheelchair access difficulties with their friend Margaret who is a full-time wheelchair user.
“It is going to be really challenging, you have to think so much more about what you are going to do during the day and whether you are going to be physically able to do different activities,” Ms Larke said.
“I want to go to the Bunbury Markets, but I’m not sure if I will be able to self-propel my wheelchair on the grass.
“When running in the recent council elections, I had a lot of people contact me about footpaths and access issues.
“By doing the day in a wheelchair challenge I can experience some of these challenges first hand.”
The three women are inviting other community members and “elected officials” to take on the challenge.
Bunbury City Council is aspiring to become more inclusive and accessible through its Most Accessible Regional City in Australia initiative.
