Bunbury man allegedly punched victim after trying to steal his phone and keys, but claims self-defence

A man who was allegedly trying to steal another man’s keys and phone, as he slept in his vehicle, has claimed he was acting in self-defence when he then allegedly punched the victim. Jarren Devon Douglas Comeagain, 30, appeared in Bunbury Magistrates Court on Monday where he applied for bail, facing one charge of assault and an aggravated charge of causing bodily harm on October 14 in Carey Park. Defence lawyer Michael Blurton told the court Mr Comeagain was acting in self-defence during an altercation which stemmed from the accused allegedly stealing the victim’s keys and phone while he slept in his car. Police prosecutor Sgt John Seidner said about 5.15am, Mr Comeagain opened the vehicle’s door and was taking the items. The court was told the victim said they chased after Mr Comeagain, yelling at him before the victim was punched to the right side of their face, falling to the ground and receiving cuts to their lip and cheekbone. Mr Blurton said Mr Comeagain claimed he was defending himself and said the case was weak because police would struggle to prove it was Mr Comeagain who threw the punch. Sgt Seidner said their case was strong, with the incident partly witnessed by the victim’s daughter. He opposed bail. Magistrate Joanne Andretich said she was “not satisfied” Mr Comeagain could prove exceptional circumstances given the evidence presented by the prosecution and refused bail. Ms Andretich said the accused had a history of bail breaches and stealing vehicles and adjourned the matter to October 31.
