South West homeowners are being warned that time is running out to prepare for the bushfire season.

The warning comes as the State Government ramps up its bushfire mitigation with a number of prescribed burns in the region.

The burnoffs have prompted a number of smoke warnings over the past fortnight.

Emergency Services Minister Francis Logan said it was time for residents to play their part and take immediate action to prepare themselves, their family and property for bushfires this summer.

“Western Australians know all too well the devastating and potentially deadly impact fires can have,” Mr Logan said.

“No-one can afford to be complacent.

“Volunteer and career firefighters do an amazing job trying to protect communities during a bushfire but there will never be enough of them to knock on every door and save every home.

“People need to take action now to prepare themselves, their family and their property by having a five-minute fire chat and creating a plan using the Bushfire Preparation Toolkit.

“Take 30 minutes right now to plan what you will do during a bushfire because leaving it to the last minute could be deadly.”

The warning comes as the 2018 Southern Australia Seasonal Bushfire Outlook showed the region’s fire season severity was increasing and lasting longer.

Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan echoed warnings saying residents could not afford to be complacent with bushfire preparedness.

“That has to happen by the end of November and don’t be complacent,” Mr Brennan said.

“We’ve seen very tragic bushfire outcomes in recent years and complacency is something we can’t afford no matter how secure some people may feel.

“If residents have any concerns about areas the City is responsible for please get in touch.”
