The Capel Chamber of Commerce has launched a new $10,000 voucher scheme to encourage businesses within the shire to shop local.

Members of the chamber will receive a $50 voucher to redeem at any business in the shire that is a member of the chamber.

Chamber president Bernie Masters said many small businesses within the shire were doing it tough.

“Until the latest relaxation of some of the COVID-19 lockdown and social distancing rules, many businesses had simply stopped operating,” Mr Masters said.

“Our members include accommodation providers who were unable to accept paying guests, while some Capel businesses such as cafes saw significant reductions in turnovers.

While $10,000 divided between 100 or more businesses may not seem like a lot, it sends a message that the chamber and our partners are supporting a ‘shop local’ initiative.

The chamber has partnered with Community Bank Capel and Capel Elders Southern Districts Estate Agency to produce the vouchers.

Capel Elders Southern Districts Estate Agency sales consultant Caroline Suckling said it was a great initiative to promote local businesses.

It’s vital to support local right now. Our small towns are so important.

Participating businesses must be members of the chamber by July 1, with membership free until June 30.
