Capel Youth Collective help clean up beach

A group of 15 Capel Youth Collective members and Bunyap House residents used their school holiday time to show respect to the environment last week, when they pulled on protective gloves and cleaned up Dalyellup Beach.

South West Waste education coordinator Kate Shaw was impressed with the number of children prepared to give up their free time to help the environment.

“Everyone can make a difference, no matter how big or small, every piece of plastic they can collect from the beach or any rubbish they can collect from the beach is one less thing an animal can eat,” she said.

“The Youth Collective program that is heading off today has a really great opportunity to connect with the community in a positive and sustainable way.”

Capel shire waste and sustainability officer James Kain said it was also a positive educational experience for the group.

“We sorted all of our rubbish into the different streams and there were lots of questions about which item goes where,” he said.

“We were able to impart that message as well, which will again filter back to the community. The parents were interested as well.”

Mr Kain directed people to the Capel Shire website for information on which items go into which bin, as well as other waste, recycling and sustainability tips.

“We are certainly not going to drop the ball on this one,” he said.

“We are going to keep updating and making sure the message is clear, so people know what they need to do.”
