Chance to check out army cadet life
Regional youth are encouraged to attend the 515 Army Cadet Unit’s open day on Saturday from 9am to get a taste of army cadet life.
Cadets will showcase typical activities such as performing drill, radio communication, first-aid skills, navigating across country and setting up to live in a field or bush environment.
As one of the nation’s leading development organisations for youth aged 12 to 19, Australian Army Cadets is a great way to learn life skills and self-discipline, according to 17-year-old regimental sergeant major Jakeb Horvath.
“I joined the cadets in 2014 because my mother was looking to get me out of the house,” he said.
“I initially had some hesitation but I stuck it out and soon started going up the ranks.
“Joining the cadets teaches you a good work ethic and by immersing yourself in responsibility outside of school, it helps you take time more seriously and prioritise tasks effectively.
“You definitely discover a sense of self-achievement while learning discipline, respect and the value of mateship.”
Jakeb said open day at the Army Barracks in Davenport was an excellent opportunity for people to get an insight into what cadet life was like.
