Coffee stops for drivers

Drivers travelling through Boyanup and Collie are being encouraged to stop for a coffee or tea over the Christmas period.

Boyanup General Store, Collie Railway Station and Sizzles Deli in Collie will provide a free coffee or tea for drivers as part of the WA Local Government Association’s RoadWise Program.

Association president Cr Lynne Craigie said driver fatigue claimed 27 lives on WA roads last year.

“Driver fatigue is a silent killer,” Cr Craigie said.

“It slows drivers’ reactions and decision-making ability, decreases their tolerance for other road users, decreases their alertness and causes poor lane tracking and speed maintenance.

“The skills and reaction times of a driver who has been awake for 24 hours are the same as someone with a blood alcohol level of 0.1 – neither is safe to be on the road.”
