Council looks to boost Sports Hall of Fame

Bunbury City Council is set to ask neighbouring councils to financially support the South West Sports Hall of Fame and its revitalisation.
The hall of fame is located at the South West Sports Centre and has not seen any new inductees since its inception in 2002.
City of Bunbury staff told the council the display was “more decorative than interactive” and there was an opportunity to induct more athletes who had represented the country in their chosen sports.
The council will next week be recommended to take a motion to the South West Zone of the WA Local Government Association, seeking support for the hall’s upgrade and expansion.
It comes after Bunbury Basketball Association secretary Marina Quain successfully put forward a motion at December’s Annual Electors Meeting for a “system” to recognise the region’s athletes.

Ms Quain told the South Western Times she was inspired to push for upgrades after a visit from Australind-raised and dual basketball Olympian Mark Worthington.
“He said that himself and other Olympians were a bit disappointed that they’d never been acknowledged for their achievements and I said I would take that on,” she said.
“There’s a lot of Olympians in our community that haven’t been acknowledged or there’s no register and we have so many.”
She said it was important to acknowledge the athletes for their achievements and sacrifices.
“It’s a huge sacrifice and they put Bunbury on the map because they always acknowledge where they’re from and so it’s great promotion for our sporting background – it’s in our DNA,” she said.
The upgrades are anticipated to cost $40,000.
