Couple are on cloud wine after big wins
Deep in the Donnybrook hinterland lies a hidden gem not many would know was in their backyard, but it has bottled great success at a recent State award.
Ria and Wayne Hammond have been partners in wine at Oakway Estate for more than 20 years and have called the property home for almost 30 years.
Recently, the winemakers were happy to dust off a spot on the trophy shelf after claiming the title of best alternative variety wine in WA for their 2018 Los Ninos Malbec.
The couple are still on cloud wine after cleaning up several other awards at the event, which Ms Hammond said was their best effort yet.
“We were very excited, sometimes I think you need something like that to know you’re doing the right thing and are on the right track,” Ms Hammond said.
But South Westerners are still astonished when they discover the boutique winery off the beaten track, according to Ms Hammond.
“We always get people saying they didn’t know we existed,” she said.
“In the Geographe wine region, Donnybrook is actually one of the most awarded sub regions there is … and we have just as many cellar doors.”
Ms Hammond said the Donnybrook region was well-known for crafting alternative variety grapes and she encouraged everyone to explore their own backyard.
