Dalyellup residents get festive

The Dalyellup community has rallied together to bring the spirit of Christmas to their locality, with a free family festival packed to the brim with entertainment to descend on Lakes Park on Sunday. The cancellation of the annual Dalyellup carols concert prompted the community to take matters in their own hands, with Ryan Loverock from Gen X Engineering, event coordinator Lisa O'Neill, youth development officer Chloerissa Eadie and Jo Paul from Bendigo Bank Capel putting final touches on event plans.

The strength of Dalyellup’s community spirit will be on full display on Sunday, as Lakes Park hosts the inaugural Community Christmas Festival.

The free family event was created entirely by the residents and businesses of Dalyellup, led by Capel shire volunteer event coordinator Lisa O’Neill.

Ms O’Neill said more than $40,000 of in kind support had been donated to make the event possible, with Bendigo Bank and Gen X Engineering coming together to create a giant Christmas Tree as the centrepiece of the festival.

An afternoon of activities will begin at 3pm, including dunk tanks, food stalls, opportunities to “have a go” at a number of sports and the chance to get up close and personal with emergency services vehicles.

Carols will fill the air from 5.30pm, with Father Christmas to visit at 6.30pm as the lights of the giant Christmas tree are switched on.

Performances from singing and dance groups will continue into the night, with rock band Platinum Project to end the festivities with a concert from 7.45pm.

Ms O’Neill said the community “decided to pull together and do it as a team” after Satterley’s annual Christmas carol event came to an end last year.

Visitors are encouraged to bring cash, a picnic blanket and their best singing voice.
