Dunsborough junior Ruby McLellan awarded South West Academy of Sport scholarship by Busselton Jetty Swim

A junior Dunsborough swimmer has been given a step up in her athletic career thanks to a popular South West event. Ruby McLellan is being supported by the Busselton Jetty Swim with a scholarship to access the South West Academy of Sport’s Individual Athlete Support Program, which helps the region’s athletes reach their full potential. Originally developing a love of the water through junior surf live saving, Ruby now swims six times a week for up to two hours alongside two additional gym sessions. Last year was a big year for the young gun, being the fastest under 15 female swimmer to complete the 3.6km course at the Busselton Jetty Swim before finishing 16th in the 15-year-olds 5km event at the Australian National Open Water Swim Championship. It is the second time the Busselton Jetty Swim has awarded a scholarship to enable a South West swimmer to receive the same level of support as other aspiring WA athletes, with organising committee volunteer Kat Rafferty describing Ruby as a worthy recipient. “The committee is so proud to be funding the Individual Athlete Support Program scholarship for a local swim star, and to be giving back to the local community,” she said. “Through the program, Ruby will receive specialised coaching and have access to nutritionists, sport psychologists and physiotherapists. “She will also have career counselling and learn life skills, which will give her invaluable tools for success, in and out of the water.” Ruby said she is excited to be chosen for the program, setting her sights on a top 10 finish at the next National Open Water Swim Championships. “It’s nice to be recognised for something that I love, and I’m looking forward to using what I learn to continually improve my swimming,” she said. With this year’s Busselton Jetty Swim just over a fortnight away, Ruby offered her tips for those training for the event. “The secret to success really is consistency and getting in the water every day if you can,” she said. “It’s also really important to stay hydrated and on event day just stay focused on yourself and your abilities.” A record 5200 swimmers are expected to dive into the turquoise waters of Geographe Bay as part of the two-day event on February 10 and 11.
