Elderly man ‘threatened with bottle in car theft bid’

Lightning-fast police have chased down a man who allegedly attempted to steal an elderly man’s car while armed with a broken bottle in Eaton this morning.

The 79-year-old was parked out the front of a store on Pratt Road around midday when an unknown man approached him.

It is alleged the man wanted to steal the victim’s car and threatened him with a smashed bottle. A struggle ensured and the man fled after spotting police.

A police car in the area at the time was waved down by members of the public. After a brief foot chase the man was apprehended by Australind police.

The victim received a minor injury to his hand.

South West detectives have charged the 30-year-old Collie man with armed robbery.

He is due to appear before the Bunbury Magistrates Court tomorrow.
