The new owner of one of Bunbury’s oldest and most iconic buildings will lease out his newest asset, but his long-term plans for the heritage listed property will for now remain a mystery.

The former Bunbury Post Office at Stephen Street in the CBD went under the hammer on Saturday, with the winning bidder rounding out the auction at $480,000.

While Summit Realty South West principal and auctioneer Greg Gardiner could not reveal the man behind the victorious bid, he told the South Western Times the Perth businessman grew up in Bunbury and had long-term plans for the historic building.

A small crowd watched on as the more than 150-year-old building was auctioned at the weekend and although the eventual winner — bidding via telephone — was the only bidder, Mr Gardiner said the sale was a good outcome.

“I think it was a pretty fair value, it was pretty well what I was thinking,” Mr Gardiner said.

“From my analyses of the property there was interest there and that was mainly local, but one was from Perth and one interstate.

“Generally with heritage-listed properties it thins out the buyers and I think that’s what’s happened here.”

He said the building would go out for lease in the near future and the broad City Centre Zoning opened it up for retail, commercial and residential.
