Future bright sparks to STEM from learning centre

West Australian Premier Mark McGowan was impressed with Newton Moore Senior High School’s new Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths centre during a visit last week.

The $3 million refurbishment included upgrades on what used to be the school’s pre-vocational centre where teachers taught automotive studies.

Head of science Lorraine Ellis said the revamp was well overdue.

“The school has been into STEM for about seven years and this new building was something Sue Kerr pushed for a long time,” Ms Ellis said.

“This building used to be like a tin shed and it’s been totally revamped.

“We had refurbishments along the way but the building has never really had the attention it warranted.”

Activities in the new facility include coding, designing and building prototypes such as solar cars, building drones and agriculture science inventions.

“Everything in here is new, from the 3D printers to the laser cutters, computer pods and more,” Ms Ellis said.

“We have had a great response from the students so far and look forward to seeing what they learn and create.”

Mr McGowan said the construction of a dedicated STEM centre at Newton Moore was one of the many election commitments made by the State Government.

“This fantastic centre will enable students to have the very best learning environment as they aim for the diversity of jobs that will be needed in the future,” he said.

“It is exciting to see the completion of a project like this.”
