Golf offers big support for women

Teams are invited to tee off in the name of supporting South West women and children escaping domestic violence at the South West Refuge Inc Charity Golf Day event on November 2.

Held at the Bunbury Golf Club, the event will kick off with a sausage sizzle before teams of four hit the green for an ambrose style competition.

The ambrose format involves each player taking a shot from the tee, with the team captain deciding on the best-positioned ball placement to play from.

The fun will continue into the night, with a charity auction and presentation of prizes following the tournament.

The refuge helps people in need in a number of ways, including a Safe At Home program and crisis accommodation, as well as support, referrals and advocacy.

Chief executive Michelle Bickers said last year’s event raised $17,500.

“The funds raised from this event help us to continue to provide exceptional service for our clients who are experiencing family and domestic violence,” she said.

“This year, the funds will continue to be added to our next phase of building improvements to add rooms to the refuge to assist more women and children and also assist in purchasing a fit-for-purpose vehicle for our Safe at Home Program. This vehicle will allow our team to better assist our rural and remote clients.”

Chairwoman Alison Comparti said the event was the refuge’s major fundraiser for the year, but also gave businesses a chance to showcase their products and services by sponsoring a hole.

“Come and play in the team ... or join us for the auction and social event afterwards.

“Challenge your workmates, or entertain your clients – you’ve got 18 holes to network.”

The money raised at the event will bolster a $10,000 donation handed over to the refuge by the Ride Against Domestic Violence team on October 8.
