Greens South West MLC Diane Evers slams Federal Government for having “no vision”
Greens South West MLC Diane Evers has claimed the Federal Government has no vision following last week’s Budget.
Ms Evers accused the Scott Morrison-led Government of thinking it could fool people with funding for roads.
“It is as though driving through the regions quickly is all that matters, but I have a higher opinion of South West voters,” she said.
“If the South West community was brought to debate the best use of its Budget allocation, I think we would see a much greater impact.
“Aside from the Busselton Foreshore Redevelopment, an example of something vibrant and inviting that benefits locals and tourists, much of the regional funding is roads or trains over east and in Perth.”
She said a lack of action in the Budget to support Collie’s transition away from a reliance on coal-related industries was not surprising from a “coal-loving Prime Minister”.
“Meanwhile, the people of Collie suffer from an uncertain future while we also wait on the McGowan Government’s promise of a transition plan,” she said.
“I am, however, relieved the Southern Forests Irrigation Scheme has not been supported in this Budget.
“Federal Budgets should fund innovation within the region to entice newcomers who set up businesses making use of the natural assets.”
Ms Evers said she would like more renewable energy options to become available in the region.
“It would help protect the region’s amazing forests, support improved and regenerative growing conditions for agriculture, invest in a willing workforce and a variety of education services,” she said.
“We could then see the South West become a renewable energy-producing hub to provide a localised power source to run value-adding equipment in our agriculture sector.”
