Humphries brothers star for Panthers

George GoodwinSouth Western Times

It was a family affair at Kelly Park when the Humphries brothers spearheaded Carey Park to a mighty 66-point victory over Busselton on Saturday.

Jarrod Humphries kicked five goals, while Herman booted two and Greg was dominant in the midfield as they led the Panthers to a 16.8 (104) to 5.8 (38) win.

It took until midway through the second quarter for Busselton to kick a goal after a horror start to the match, when they missed five shots at goal in the first term.

This was while Jarrod Humphries slotted a goal thanks to a 50m penalty after Jaxon Bell had the ball slapped from his grasp at the three-minute mark.

Three behinds by the Magpies closed the gap midway through the first term, but their poor kicking at goal was costing them dearly.

Jeff Carter, who was awarded the game ball as best-on-ground, fed his forwards with a series of long, raking kicks out of defence, as Jarrod Humphries and Riese Wilkey kicked 10 goals between them.

Also in the spotlight for the Panthers was Sam Read and Eli Hill, with the pair coming in and out of the play with a flurry of fast breaks off half-back, while rising star Banjo Buswell, Jordan Yarran and ruckman Tyler Chalwell all caught the eye with some solid play.

Keeping the Magpies goalless for the first quarter and allowing them just one by half-time, the Panthers were comfortably ahead at the main break thanks to two goals by Jarrod Humphries as well as singles by Herman Humphries and Coen Bradshaw.

Busselton put up a fight in the third term with Mitchell Tenardi, Brodie Plozza, James Powley and Josh Embry working hard, while Steve Cameron booted two goals.

Bailey Sanford also managed to get a goal, but the Magpies were still falling further behind with Carey Park’s third term lead increased thanks to two Wilkey goals, as well as majors to Heath Stewart, Tim Yarran and Herman Humphries.

Tenardi kicked the Magpies lone goal midway through the fourth quarter but was beaten by two more from Wilkey in a superb display.

The win was Carey Park’s third to start the season.
