Firefighters from as far as Fremantle were called to bring a structure fire under control this morning at Griffin Coal’s Ewington mine site.

The fire was reported just after 2.30am and it took almost three hours to contain the blaze.

Two Collie Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service units were supported by units from Bunbury, Donnybrook, Eaton-Australind and Fremantle brigades.

Cockburn State Emergency Service was called on to provide support and the mine site’s water carts were also used to combat the fire.

There are reports of damage to a conveyor belt and rail line, but the full extent of the damage and whether it would impact the company’s production was yet to be confirmed.
