Juniors made tracks to speedway

South Western Times

After 40 years, the State’s best junior sedan drivers took to the QUIT Bunbury Speedway to compete in the 2017 WA Junior Sedan Championship at the weekend.

The two-day event featured more than 50 cars, with the Bunbury track hosting the competition for the first time since 1977.

Speedway promotions manager Andrew Roberts said he was pleased to see so many juniors in the sport.

“We had drivers from as far as Broome and Kalgoorlie coming to participate,” he said.

Roberts said he was encouraged to see 15 girls nominate for the weekend’s series.

On Saturday night there were 15 heats, followed by five heats on Sunday night and the C, B and A-Main races.

Remarkably, the youngest driver in the championships was just 11 years old.
