Keys left in stolen hire car

Kate FieldingSouth Western Times

Bunbury police have renewed calls to reduce the risk of opportunistic crimes after a car with keys in the ignition was stolen from a carpark before being found burnt out on Sunday.

The hire car was stolen between 5.45am and 6.45am as its driver had a meal at McDonald’s in Carey Park, according to officer-in-charge Sen. Sgt Mal Jones.

Sen. Sgt Jones said the male driver had left the keys in the Toyota Echo sedan and a door open.

He said closed-circuit TV footage showed two people rummaging through the car before another two people drove away in the vehicle.

The car was later found on Sunday afternoon burnt out at Estuary Drive in East Bunbury.

Sen. Sgt Jones said police were investigating the incident and reviewing CCTV.
