The outbound lane of Koombana Drive is closed today and will remain closed tomorrow and Monday from the Navigators roundabout to the Dolphin Discovery Centre roundabout between 6am and 5pm.

The kilometre-long stretch of road is being resurfaced after it was widened and kerbed as part of the Koombana Foreshore redevelopment project.

Site supervisor John Carbone said those heading out of town will need to find an alternative route.

“We’re going to be hot-mixing the road and for safety, we’re going to just let the traffic travel into town – but to get out of town they’ll have to go Blair Street,” he said.

“There’s just too many machines to be operating and too many men will be working on the road for it to be safe to have two lanes of traffic.

“So we’ll just have the one coming into town but the one coming out of time will be closed for the duration of the work.”

Along with the resurfacing, kerbing and widening, a dedicated cycle lane will be marked out, featuring a differing surface colour to distinguish it.

“The cycle lane will be red-hot mix, while the rest of the road will be black as per normal,” Mr Carbone said.

The additional kilometre of cycle lane being installed will mean cyclists can very nearly ride from one end of Koombana Drive to the other without ever venturing across and into the traffic.

The upgrades will also grant better access to the foreshore and kiosk carpark.
