Local list: Guide to best quirky, colourful Bunbury Geographe street art

While the Bunbury Geographe region is known for producing delectable food and wines, it’s also made a name for itself in the arts scene for the creative pockets of colour hidden throughout the region. If you’re on the hunt for the perfect Instagram photo or looking to take yourself on a captivating walking trail that doesn’t involve the great outdoors, then look no further than the South West. The region boasts some of the best street art around, with quirky, colourful spots sprinkled throughout the vibrant towns. This list only scrapes the surface of the vast creative displays in the region. Let us know your favourites. Bunbury The coastal city is admired for laidback living, but look a little closer and you’ll find it’s decked out by some of the world’s finest artists. Kyle Hughes-Odgers, Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre carpark Tucked behind the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre is a pocket of life where Kyle Hugh-Odger’s great splash of colour illuminates a wall. While Bunbury boasts several amazing artworks throughout, the combination of blue and green hues and the unique art style make this one of my favourite pieces. Dress to impress and head along to appreciate the art and maybe make this your next photo shoot background. The Storm, behind Grand Cinemas A masterpiece mural by Fintan Magee, The Storm was painted in 2015 as part of a series reflecting the housing crisis in America at the time and climate change — a theme which is as relevant as ever to the South West today. The intricate details and thematic consideration make the mega artwork one to have high on your list. Frida Kahlo, Green Depot Artist Deanna Mosca transformed the wall of the Green Depot into a beautiful tribute to Mexican painter Frida Kahlo late last year and the work is something I had to include on the list. The eye catching mural is bold depiction of the inspirational feminist artist who is best known for her brilliant self-portraits and breaking down barriers and stereotypes. Jam Wall, South’s Furniture Laneway If you’re after an eclectic mix of colours, styles and themes, then Jam Wall is the perfect spot for you. Created as part of Six, Two, Three, Zero’s Rediscover Bunbury street art initiative, the Jam Wall is the perfect depiction of the diverse mix of cultures and communities living in Bunbury. Collie As of last year, the coal mining hub was transformed into a world of colour as part of the Collie Mural Trail, which saw a collection of contemporary artworks painted throughout the town centre and at Wellington Dam. Friday Night at the Theatre Royal, 64 Forrest Street A personal favourite of mine, this delectable mix of colour and character is an ode to the much-loved Theatre Royal where residents would catch the latest flicks and get up to all sorts of trouble. Located where the formal theatre sat, the mural, crafted by the talented artists Marina Lommerse and Michael Phillips, depicts an audience decked out in the costumes of the time as they watch the picture of a bushwalker exploring Collie. Black Diamond, 101 Throssell Street Natalie Veal created a beautiful depiction of the tourist hot-spot Black Diamond Lake. It’s a picturesque painting that makes you want to step in and dip your toe in the cool water. Looking at the wall, it’s almost as if you’re right at the lake yourself. Gnaala Karla Booja, 42 Johnston Street Kamsani Bin Salleh, also known as Kambarni, combined culture and creativity when creating the mesmerising Gnaala Karla Booja — another favourite piece of mine in town due to the story and combination of colours. The title of the work reflects the name of the region that covers Capel, Donnybrook, Balingup, Wickepin, Narrogin, Williams, Mundijong, Kwinana, Brookton, Pingelly, Wagin, Harvey, Collie, Pinjarra, Mandurah and Boddington and to me reflects the environment we live in and the beautiful creatures found within. Golden Crust Bakery, 86 Steere Street North A warming reflection of the town’s history, this mural depicts a horse pulling a cart for the Golden Crust Bakery, which delivered bread and milk to the townspeople until the 1950s when cars took over. The intricate attention to details, both historical and artistic, make Jarrad Martyn’s work a captivating piece of art to visit. Capel Take a walk through the town of Capel and you’ll find beautiful art projects by talented creatives and community initiatives scattered throughout. Erin Rafferty, 31 Forrest Road The beautiful mix of colours created by local artist and tattooer Erin Rafferty pays homage to the town’s tuart logging history. It’s an eye catching pop of colour that will leave you thinking about it long after it’s out of sight. Celestin Hutchinson, Corner of Roe and Forrest roads Artist Celestin Hutchinson was among the talented picks who left their mark on the town as part of the inaugural Captivate Capel celebrations in 2017. Her piece gives a glimpse into the rich history of the area and is an aesthetically pleasing addition to the Seniors Centre. Water tank, Capel Community Centre Pop behind the Capel Community Centre to scope out the creative take on the water tank, which also received a facelift in 2017 as part of Captivate Capel. Artist Erin Rafferty joined forces with local children to create a community beehive.
