Two South West horses record maiden victories at the Bunbury Turf Club today.

Ross Price’s Arctic Stream ($2.25) had a debut to remember, grabbing the lead in the 150m to win the $15,000 Eaton Boomers Football Club Maiden (1208m).

The three-year-old sat in eighth at the turn, but took well to the outside and finished three-quarters of a length in front of Gingerella.

Jockey Joseph Azzopardi said he was confident heading into the race that the gelding would win.

“It looked a good race for him and he showed me a lot in the trial,” he said.

“He is well bred and is a fantastic mover. I have a lot of time for him.

“I needed a little bit of luck early, but he got out with about 200m to go and kicked on.”

Azzopardi said he was in a “purple patch” of form.

“I am getting some good rides and some good winners,” he said.

“It was good to get a few winners here the other day and hopefully it keeps carrying on.”

Myalup trainer Justin Warwick was rewarded for persistence when Mervyn ($3.60) claimed a win in the $15,000 Parks Centre Shopping Centre Maiden (1008m).

It was the four-year-olds 10th start, having placed six times before today’s race, with Justin’s daughter Lucy taking the chestnut gelding into the lead from the turn right until the end to win by half a head from Wine Thief.

“I have done thousands of miles with him trying to win a race,” Justin said.

“He will always earn. He is very quick, but can only go for 57 to 58 seconds.

“The horse sort of runs his own race. He sits up the front and runs out of candles at the end.”

Warwick said there was not many races for the sprinter in the near future.
