Meet the chief of staff: a passion for news and politics drives career in journalism

If you were to tell my family, friends and others who knew me a decade ago that I would end up being a journalist after I left school, you would have been hard pressed to find someone who would be surprised. During my final years of primary school, I remember the librarian telling me I was the only student she knew who actually read the papers. This did not even take into account the evening news I would watch when I got home. In many ways, the news was the first thing that really sparked my interest. Politics followed a few years later. I had no interest in sport as a teenager, so in many ways election night became my version of a grand final. I know right, total nerd. Over the past decade, I have been a winner of The West Australian’s GEN Z guest editorship experience, participated in the WA Youth Parliament and spent four years on the City of Bunbury’s Youth Advisory Council. I was the Bunbury youth mayor when construction began on the Koolambidi Woola Youth Precinct and while I was only a small cog in a big wheel, it remains something I am extremely proud to have been a part of making happen. Having covered the Katanning and Harvey-Waroona region during the past two years, I am excited to be taking on the chief of staff role for six mastheads across the South West.
