Men of Song support Movember
The Bunbury Men of Song will sport hairy upper lips this month to raise money and awareness for men’s health.
Choir president and retired doctor Keith Howe said the Movember campaign would help him to raise money for a cause that was close to his heart.
“I am personally going for prostate cancer this year because of a friend who died recently from the tennis club so it’s personal for me,” Dr Howe said.
He said it was a great reminder to get checked as early detection could save lives.
“There are good screenings for prostate cancer which can help save lives and should be taken up by everyone,” he said.
The other aspect is mental health which is really important because men tend not to access services nearly as early or as often as women.
This is reflected in suicide statistics.
Bunbury City councillor and Bunbury Men of Song member Murray Cook summed up the situation.
“Bunbury Men of Song have lost three or four men in the past few years all from cancer.
“The issue for men is that more men now die of prostate cancer than women die of breast cancer - a little known fact.
“It’s a hidden thing which men always find difficult to talk about.
“Singing really helps because it gets the endorphins running around in your head and keeps you focused.
“The guys do bond and that is why it hurts so much when we lose members.”
