It is a hairy task and next month it’s set to be the hairiest yet.

About 200 staff at Bunbury Regional Prison will join 23,000 prison officers nationwide this November to grow their best lip luggage.

Starting next month the prison officers participating in Movember will raise funds for staff suffering from mental health problems.

WA Prison Officers Union secretary Andy Smith said officers worked in an extremely stressful environment day-in/day-out and more was needed to improve their mental health.

“That nature of this job is that we deal with those people that have been removed from the community, those that the public don’t want to deal with,” he said.

“We deal with them 12 hours a day in confined spaces ... It’s an extremely stressful environment.”
