New support centre a State first
The Early Intervention Centre at Glen Huon Primary School was officially opened by Collie-Preston MLA Mick Murray and Glen Huon Primary School principal Carolyn Nankervis on Wednesday.
Children from birth to eight years old will be able to access services on-site including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and language specialists and have access to a child health nurse.
Mr Murray said the new $1.5 million state-of-the-art centre was the first of its kind in the State and would provide essential services and support to benefit families and students in the area.
“It is a really great advantage to the community itself because young mums and dads have somewhere to run if they need help,” he said.
He also said it would help children with learning disabilities by identifying the issue early so children were more prepared for when they began school.
“It is very important for any community and it is great to hear this will be used as a model for other areas in the State – it’s a first and I think it’s a very big positive to the area.”
Glen Huon Primary School principal Carolyn Nankervis was behind the idea of the facility and she said she was thrilled to see the dream become a reality.
“For me I’m at the highlight of my career and this is just a wonderful achievement for my community and for me,” Mrs Nankervis said. “This means our kids now can be at school and the therapist can come to school and they have a speciality room and they do their work with the kids here in a purpose built room on the school site, they don’t have to leave the school – it’s just absolutely gorgeous.
“It’s a dream come true for me and Carly my deputy has just been amazing and I could not of done it without her.”
Education and training minister Sue Ellery said the new facility would aim to help kids perform better throughout their schooling.
“We recognise that by helping parents access important services during the early years, their children are more likely to succeed at school.”
The new centre will be accessible to families from Glen Huon, Eaton, River Valley and Clifton Park primary schools.
