Onshore Cup Football Association 2023: Bunbury Eagles soar above Boyanup Boars in final round contest

The Bunbury Eagles entered the Onshore Cup Football Association finals series full of confidence, after convincingly defeating Boyanup 11.8 (74) to 4.4 (28) on Saturday at Hay Park. Despite having secured a finals berth, the Eagles knew heading into the clash that victory in the final round of the home and away season would ensure them a home elimination final against Augusta on August 12. With persistent rain lingering, the football became extremely slippery, although the Eagles adapted quicker to the challenging conditions. On the back of Clayton Ireland routinely getting first use at each centre bounce, the home side proceeded to break the game open in the second term, booting five unanswered goals and holding the Boars scoreless. Along with Ireland’s handy work at the coalface, both Lucas Du Preez and Corey Tomsett were extremely damaging in the corridor. At Sir Stewart Bovell Park, the Busselton Bombers finished unbeaten on top of the ladder, defeating fourth-placed Augusta 11.12 (78) to 2.1 (13). The victory means both senior league teams in Busselton — both the Bombers and SWFL-based Magpies — have a combined 26-0 winning record to date this year. In the remaining game of the round, the Dunsborough Mulies claimed derby bragging rights against the Vasse Kakkas, 13.10 (88) to 3.6 (24), following the Bombers’ victory.
