Outgoing South West Phoenix coach calls for greater mental health resources in community sport

The South West Phoenix recently parted company with coach Nick Carter in the aftermath of their recent 5-0 loss against Ashfield in Perth. But while naturally gutted he won’t be able to help rescue his side out of a State league division 2 relegation dogfight, Carter — who was crowned coach of the year during last season’s promotion from the Belt Up amateur premier division — is hopeful greater awareness can stem from his departure. “Mental health support for coaches is always something I have wanted to speak about,” Carter said. “We talk a lot about depression and anxiety — players often get mentioned, but we do not talk about these things when it comes to coaches. “It has been a challenging time for me, especially over the last six months, with my dad dying over in the UK. But now, I can now focus on my own mental health and improve things. “However, I would like to let any other coach in the South West know that if they are struggling with mental health issues or need support, they can always come and speak with me. “I have got a little bit of experience in not only dealing with it, but talking about it as well.” Phoenix club president Jen Curtis confirmed that Carter’s assistant, Gareth Johnston, would remain to help oversee coaching duties for the rest of the season. Carter, who is a close friend of Johnston, holds no ill will and believes the Phoenix are more than capable of avoiding relegation. “I am hopeful and do see them picking up some favourable results,” Carter said. “Especially with Gaz (Johnston) in there. I believe they have the players, so hopefully they can pick up the points that they need.”
