Party heralds new precinct

A raft of entertainment will herald the completion of the Capel Civic Precinct as the community is invited to gather for a “Party in the Precinct” on Saturday.

A band will break-in the new stage at the amphitheatre, as patrons also enjoy community stalls, skate and scooter demonstrations and a roving pirate.

The celebration will also include an art installation and performance by members of the Capel Youth Collective art and drama clubs, who have spent 10 weeks preparing.

The art installation is a pyramid of clouds in myriad colours, starting from “heavy thoughts” and bullying taunts, trickling down to positive affirmations to share a message on how words can impact others.

Capel shire president Murray Scott said the official opening was an important step in revitalising the town centre.

“This journey began with the recognition by council in 2008 that the community of Capel needed an activated space that connected the community to its local government, added to economic activity and provided a sense of place for visitors and residents alike,” he said.

“This sense of place and a connection to history is important to this community.

“It is a sincere pleasure for council to deliver a space that incorporates a modern administration building and expanded recreational facilities including a skateable link, barbecues, playground, event stage and amphitheatre, as well as improved access for resident and visitors alike to the town centre.”

Cr Scott welcomed everyone in the district to join in the celebrations of the “great achievement”.

“I’d like to thank our local Federal member Ms Nola Marino for her support and I also thank our State parliamentarian, the member for Collie-Preston, Mick Murray,” he said.

He also thanked the South West Development Commission, Lotterywest, multiple government departments, project designers Cardno and constructor Perkins, as well as shire staff, councillors and community members who made the project possible.

The party will kick off at Erle Scott Park from 10am and wrap up at 2pm.
